Thanks, Intel for ruining my WIDI

Initially, last month, I got WIDI working well between my Belkin adapter and brnad new Toshiba Satellite R830 "out of the box". At the time it updated the firmware on the Belkin adapter and we've had many happy hours of viewing. (WIDI software as downloaded from the Toshiba support site).

Today, however, I was prompted to download the latest Intel Wifi drivers and WIDI software. After installation, the Belkin box we updated again and all seemed well. It was odd, however, that I was asked to input security numbers 3 times, the last two times being 8 digit numbers, (I think). I then watched some streaming TV for a couple of minutes, then it all went wrong. I lost my Wifi and, despite shutting WIDI down, could not connect to the Internet again without rebooting. Managed to connect WIDI again and exactly the same thing happened. Rebooted and the WIDI then failed to connect, no adapter was found.

Having read on here that people had had problems like this after updating the software, I did a System Restore, but still no joy. I restored the Belkin adapter to factory settings and that did not help either. I uninstalled the WIDI app and reinstalled it and reinstalled the original Wifi software. The adapter then tried to connect and I thought all was well but I then got the error that it could not obtain a network address.

The not-very-helpful Help file told me to check Firewall settings. There was no entry for PAN DHCP (?) and when I checked "Services" this was not running (I had not stopped it). I also found that other services which may be required were not running. I messed about a bit more and eventually it connected. I have no idea what it was I did that got it going.

Although it is working, it is not working as well as it was before. I have to set "Extend Desktop" manually whilst this was done before automatically. Also the Belkin adapter firmware has not been updated from its factory setting whereas it was updated the first time I connected to it last month.

I would like to put on record my dismay that a software "update" from Intel could cause so much grief. I would like to know how I an get back to where I was before this occurred!

PS I'm running Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium, The WIDI software I reverted to is 2.0.92.0 and the version that caused my nightmares was 3.5.40.0
