Re: How to fix bricked Galileo?

Hello rmm200,

I am a little confused about 5v and the USB.

I keep reading about not plugging in the USB before the 5v plug.

At least one article says that the Galileo will run from the USB power only but other articles say that the board could be damaged if the 5v plug isn't plugged in first.

If the board can be run from the USB without the 5v plug as stated in other articles then doen't that imply that Linux has opened the USB port as per your short note?

If there is no power to the board, how can Linux be running in order to turn on the USB port?

I looked at the schematic p.15 and I agree that if the 5v plug is in Linux will boot up and that it can open the USB HOST port which should turn on the LED and provide 5v to whatever is attached to the USB HOST port.  It appears though that the USB CLIENT [I am sure this is the connector that the articles keep talking about] does not have that requirement or ability as 5v comes from whatever is attached to the connector.  If the source has enough current, it probably can run the whole board give or take some circuits that are or are not attached to it.  Because the LED is not attached to the USB CLIENT circuit, it cannot be turned on by it.  IMO, the LED only indicates that 5v from the plug is available for the USB HOST to use.  To me, a host is a controller which should have its own power and a client is just a user which should be controlled so why is the USB HOST dependent when the USB CLIENT is not?  Has anybody ever used the USB HOST?

The schematic p.15 would be less confusing if it were drawn correctly with the USB Client on the left side of the circuit instead of on the right side.  It appears to imply that current is running to the connector, left to right, when it actually runs from it, right to left.  I know this is nit picking but it can't hurt to do it right.

So, I have done a lot of guessing but I still do not know what bricked my board.

Regards, Sundevil1
